TEAM GEORGIA / GSSA AIR RIFLE TEAM BRINGS HOME SILVER
Five of Georgia's premier Air Rifle shooters traveled to Akron
Ohio to represent Georgia at the NRA National 3 Position Air Rifle Championship
match. The young Georgia Sport Shooting Association sponsored team finished
with Silver Medals posting a score of 4693 just 3 points shy of Pennsylvania’s
4696 gold medal effort. Michigan took the Bronze Medal with a 4654.
The match consisted of 40 record shots (20 each over two separate days of
competition) in each of the prone, standing, and kneeling events each day with
the aggregate score representing the total shots of the 2-day competition.
To compete in the match, each competitor had to post a qualifying score in the
NRA State Championship Qualifying match held in May 2007. Top contenders were
then selected from Georgia to represent the State at the National Level
Competition in Akron Ohio.
GA's team members were Team Captain Phillip Huckaby of Griffin, April Dunn from
Newnan, Kyle Phillips from Stockbridge, Forrest Klein from Columbus and Erin
Holliman from Comer Ga. The coach for this years team is Randy Phillips of
Stockbridge Ga. Huckaby, Dunn, Phillips and Klein are all members of the
Spalding County 4H Shooting Sports Program which regularly practices at The Ole
Mill Range Complex in Griffin GA.
Three of GA's shooters finished in the top ten shooters of the competition. Of
the possible 1200 individual points, Phillip Huckaby finished 5th overall with a
score of 1178. Kyle Phillips placed 6th just one point behind Huckaby with an
1177 and April Dunn 9th with an 1174.
The team completed a 12-hour trip to Akron and endured two tough days of
competition, along with an all day training seminar conducted by subject matter
experts and nationally ranked athletes and sports medicine professionals hosted
by the NRA.
One of the highlights of the trip was the Barter Bar where all the teams get
together from all across the US and trade tokens or souvenirs from their state.
The Barter Bar gives teams a chance to meet each other and make new friends.
More importantly team members shared cell numbers, email addresses, phone
numbers and made new friends and memories that will last a lifetime.
Team Members Huckaby, Phillips and Dunn by virtue of their standings, qualified
to represent the USA in an International Air Rifle Postal Team Competition
against The South African Schools Shooting Union as well as other invited
countries. Awards will consist of participation certificates, pins, and patches,
as well as “Bragging Rights.”
Team Members Phillips and Dunn along with Adam Thrasher, Matt Branyon, and Jake
Watkins, all from the Spalding County 4H Shooting Sports Program, will Represent
Georgia at the 2007 Junior Olympic 3 Position Air Rifle Championship held July
11 –12, 2007 In Boling Green KY. Results from that competition to follow.
